How to Share Files Between Computers Windows 10 or 11

If you want to share files or folders on your windows 10 or 11 computer within your network connections then you can share them by using control panel sharing options and enabling network discovery and giving permissions to the folder to access and view or edit those files or  folders. You can also share files and folders between computers with the same network with restricted access and whenever a user wants to access those files or folders user need to enter a password then you can set them as well by turning on option password protected sharing options and restrict the access as well.

Share files between computers windows 10

By following below steps you can easily share file and folders between computers on windows 10 or 11 within your network.

Step 1: Click on the search menu on your windows 10 or 11 computer -> Search for control panel and open it.

Step 2: On right side -> select view by to  category

Step 3: Now, select network and internet option.

Step 4: Click on Network and Sharing center.

Step 5: On the left side pane -> Click on Change advanced sharing settings.

Step 6: Under network discovery -> Click on turn on network discovery.

Step 7: Also turn on file and priner sharing and click on save change.

Step 8: Now, click on All Networks -> Under public folder sharing -> Turn on sharing so anyone in network can access can read and write files in the public folders.

Step 9: Also enable -> Use 128 bit encryption to help protect file sharing connections.

Step 10: Also turn on -> Password protected sharing option and click on radio button side to it -> click on save changes.

Step 11: Now, click on change adaptor settings -> right click on your Ethernet network -> Select properties.

Step 12: Select internet protocol version 4 (IPv4) -> Click on Properties.

Step 13: Select radio button next to -> obtain IP address automaticall and obtain dns server address automatically options are selected and click on ok and save changes.

Share Files or Folders with Another Computer

Step 14: Now, go ahead and open a file directory or file which you want to share with another computer on your network and right click onit and select Show more option.

Step 15:  Now, select -> give access to -> Select Specific People.

Step 16: Select the user listed here -> Right click on the user -> Select read/write and click on checkbox here under user account and click on share button on bottom.

Step 17: Now, click on done and close all open windows.

Once you have done all the above steps and change settings in you advanced sharing settings, the other user on your local computer network will be able to view and copy and write your folders which you have shared on your computer.

Share files and folder with only Read Access on windows 10 or 11 Computer

If you want to give access to only read the  folder that your want to share on your computer and other user don’t want to edit those files or modify the shared files then you need to set the options while sharing to allow access to only read files and uncheck write and other permissions here. 

Windows 10 Share Folder on Network with Password

When you share file or folders using network sharing there will be an option under sharing to enable or disable folder or file access with password, if you set this option to enable then when ever user opens the files which you have shared it will ask to enter username and password and Shared folder asking for password on windows 10.

Enable Turn on Password Protected

Step 1: Go to control panel

Step 2: Click on Network and internet.

Step 3: Click on network and sharing center

Step 4: Click on Advanced sharing center 

Step 5: Now, scroll down -> under Password protected sharing -> Click on turn on password protected sharing.

Step 6: Click on save changes and close opened windows.

Step 7: Now, click on the checkbox next to -> Turn off Password protected sharing here and click on save changes.
