How To Fix Total War Rome Remastered Low FPS | NEW & Updated 2021

While Total War Rome Remastered is generally stable and free from major game-breaking bugs, many players are reporting that they experience low FPS issues in both during battles and in the campaign map. In this troubleshooting guide, we’ll show the things that you can try to fix low FPS for this game.

What is low FPS in Total War Rome Remastered?

FPS stands for Frames Per Second. When we say “low FPS” in Total War Rome Remastered, it refers to perceptible stuttering during battles or in the campaign map. I personally experience low FPS issue in some of my campaigns when I try to zoom in the campaign map.

Keep in mind that low FPS is different from network lag. If your game seems to stutter even when you’re not playing the multiplayer mode of Total War Rome Remastered, you’re likely dealing with low FPS. However, if the stuttering, “rubber banding,” or general poor performance of the game only occurs in multiplayer, it may due to a network lag, which is a separate issue caused by your internet connection.

In this guide, we’ll be dealing with low FPS only.

Reasons for low FPS in Total War Rome Remastered?

If Total War Rome Remastered appears to stutter or slow down either in the campaign map, or during battles, it can be due to one of the causes below.

Slow CPU

Some computers may develop CPU-related issues in the middle of their operation. If your processor slows down while you’re playing a game, it may result to low FPS as the frame rate may drop dramatically in a hurry. Some players may fix the problem by lowering the graphics settings of the game but if you’ve done that already, then other factors may be the main reason.

A processor slowdown may occur due to many factors but a common occurrence in gaming can be attributed to overheating. This means that the processor’s internal temperature has risen too high that the system has to drastically adjust its performance in order to bring down the temperature to a manageable level.

If you have an old Intel core processor, you should consider upgrading to a more powerful one.

RAM Running Low

RAM, also known as memory, is one of the system requirements that every PC player must know, especially when troubleshooting performance issues. Total War Rome Remastered requires that your PC has a minimum of 6GB RAM (but you should preferably want to meet the recommended 8GB RAM). If your machine has insufficient RAM, it can lead to a drop in frame rate in games as the system will have to pause in order to manage the memory.

Hard Disk Drive Issues

Games may sometimes need to read or write off the hard drive during game play. Most of time, this happens without any noticeable issue, if your hard drive works normally. However, there may be cases when the hard drive fails to respond fast enough that the game suffers a sudden drop in frame rate for a second or two.

I initially installed Total War Rome Remastered in my old SSD (Solid State Drive) and ironically, I noticed severe FPS drop there compared to when the game was ran in may hard disk drive. If you’re using an SSD and you noticed low FPS, try to delete some files and free up some space to fix the problem. SSDs are notoriously inefficient when they’re almost full and that’s what happened to mine.

After I deleted a few GBs from my SSD, Total War Rome Remastered runs smoothly again.

Game bugs

Occasional low FPS issues may happen in games due to inefficient coding. New games are especially prone to bugs and glitches although FPS-related issues due to poor coding are usually fixed by developers relatively easily.

Outdated Drivers

A driver is a mini-OS of a hardware component and it requires regular updates to keep things working smoothly. If your graphics card drivers are not up-to-date, Windows may encounter issues when using the video card during your game play.

Fortunately, updating your graphics card drivers is very easy. We’ll show you how it’s done below.

Changes in Power Management Settings

If you play Total War Rome Remastered in a laptop, it may suffer from low FPS when the PC runs low on battery. You should consider tweaking your power management settings to fix the issue.

How to fix Total War Rome Remastered low FPS?

If the frame rate of your Total War Rome Remastered game has become too low or intolerable, you need to do interventions to fix the problem.  Below are the fixes that you can try.

Fix 1 :- Check for the latest graphics card drivers

If the drivers of your graphics chipsets are outdated, you may experience GPU-related problems such as unexpected crashes, black screen, poor performance, or low FPS when playing Total War Rome Remastered.

Depending on the discrete GPU that you’re using, click on any of the link that applies in order to know how to update your drivers:

  • AMD

If you are using the built-in or integrated GPU from Intel, this article should tell how to keep it updated.

Fix 2 :- Terminate Other Programs

Some programs may create a conflict with other apps or games. If you are running other applications while Total War Rome Remastered is playing, pull up Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and close them from there. Try to ensure that only the game is running before checking if the problem goes away. This is a simple way to free up resources that might be needed by the system. Of course, it also helps you narrow down if a certain application has a problem with Total War Rome Remastered.

Fix 3 :- Troubleshoot your Hard Drive

When it comes to gaming, SSDs are highly recommended but in case you’re not using one, the first thing that you can do is to ensure that you defragment your hard disk drive. To to do that, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Windows key or Start button.
  1. Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  1. Select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  1. Select the drive that you want to defrag and select Optimize.

Keep in mind that Windows 10 is designed to automatically defrag your drives. However, you can also manually do it now if you think that it’s been a while since the drive was last optimized.

Fix 4 :- Use the Right Power Management Options.

To ensure that your PC performs well during games, you want to choose a High performance plan. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Press the Windows key or Start button.
  1. Select Settings.
  1. Select System.
  1. Select Power & sleep.
  1. Select Additional power settings.
  1. In the Power Options panel, select High Performance.

Fix 5 :- Tweak the Game’s Graphics Settings

You can try to lower down the display settings of Total War Rome Remastered if your PC is unable to meet the recommended system requirements. Just go to the in-game Graphics Settings and try to use a lower graphics quality. Keep in mind that my PC more than meets the recommended game requirements and i’m using the Ultra graphics quality but I still experience lag in the campaign map from time to time.

You can play around with other options in the graphics settings to see which one will help you fix your problem.

Fix 6 :- Don’t use Display Resolution Scaling.

You can try the steps below to disable display and GPU level scaling or gameplay resolution scaling. The steps are only applicable if you have an NVIDIA GPU.

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  1. On the left pane, select Adjust desktop size and position.
  1. On the right pane, under Apply the following settings, select No scaling.
  1. Under Perform scaling on, select GPU.
  1. Click on Apply.

On the GPU level, you can also disable scaling, just like what you did with your display scaling. Here’s how:

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. On the left pane, select Adjust desktop size and position.
  3. On the right pane, under Apply the following settings, select No scaling.
  4. Under Perform scaling on, select GPU.
  5. Click on Apply.

Fix 7 :- Lock Total War Rome Remastered to 30 FPS.

If your PC has a performance issue, or if it barely meets the minimum system requirements of the game, you can try to lower the frame per second or FPS to improve overall performance. Here’s what you can do

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  1. On the left pane, select Manage 3D Settings.
  1. Select the Program Settings tab.
  1. Select Total War Rome Remastered.
  1. In the next section, find Vertical sync and select Adaptive (half refresh-rate).
  1. Load the game, go to Settings, and disable in-game V. Sync.
