Whether you are watching the latest blockbuster or a foreign language series, subtitles are essential. Since the transition from HBO Max to Max, the user interface has changed. If you are struggling to find the “CC” button or your subtitles are out of sync, our lab has verified these steps for the 2026 build of the app.

Method 1: Enabling CC on iPhone, iPad, and Android
The mobile interface for Max uses a hidden “Heads Up Display” (HUD).
1. Open the Max app and play your video.
2. Tap the screen once to bring up the controls.
3. Look for the “CC” bubble icon in the bottom right (or top right on iPads).
4. Select your preferred language.
5. Pro Tip: You can customize the font size and background opacity here to improve readability on small screens.
Method 2: Enable Captions on Xbox Series X/S and One
Consoles handle captions through the controller logic.
1. While a video is playing, press the Up Arrow on the D-pad.
2. Navigate to the CC icon that appears in the top menu.
3. Press A to toggle it ON.
4. If it fails to show, go to Xbox Settings > Accessibility > Captioning and ensure “Override App Settings” is OFF.
Method 3: Max.com Website (Desktop/Laptop)
1. Hover your mouse over the playing video.
2. Click the Speech Bubble (CC) icon in the bottom right corner.
3. Choose “ON” and then click Settings if you need to adjust the text color for high-contrast viewing.

Max app on XBOX
Step 1: Access HBO Max on your Xbox and then launch the movie or tv show you want to watch.
Step 2: press the left analog stick down to bring up the heads up display,and then press the left analog stick down again to show the closed caption toggle.
Step 3: move the selector to “on” and then press “A” to enable closed captions in HBO max on your Xbox.
Now when you return to your movie or tv show you will see closed captions displayed.
