If you have installed Avast Security on your MacBook Pro or Air and find it is slowing down your system or blocking valid emails, you may want to remove it. Many users try to uninstall Avast by dragging the icon to the Trash, but this is a mistake. Because Avast is a security suite, it roots itself deep into the macOS kernel.
In 2026, macOS Sequoia uses advanced System Extensions. If these are not removed properly, they will continue to run in the background as ghost daemons, draining your battery. At asavvyweb, our lab led by Vangari Divya (M.Tech) has verified the 3 correct ways to purge Avast from your system.
Method 1: Using the Built-in Avast Uninstaller (The Gold Standard)
This is the only method that correctly signals the macOS Kernel to release Avast’s background permissions.
- Open the Avast Security application from your Applications folder.
- Click on Avast in the menu bar at the top left of your screen.
- Select Uninstall Avast Security from the dropdown menu.
- When the uninstaller window opens, click Continue.
- You will be prompted to enter your Mac administrator password. This is required to delete system-level files.
- Once completed, click Finish and restart your Mac.
Method 2: Manual Library Path Cleanup (For Ghost Notifications)
If you still see Avast popups after uninstalling, you must manually delete the residual metadata.
- Open Finder and press Command + Shift + G.
- Paste this path: /Library/Application Support/ and delete the Avast folder.
- Repeat the process for these paths:
~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/Preferences - Search for any file with “com.avast” in the name and move it to the Trash.
- Empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
Method 3: Terminal Command for Forced Removal (Advanced)
If the app is frozen and won’t let you click “Uninstall,” you can use a terminal script.
- Open Terminal (Command + Space > Terminal).
- Type: sudo /Applications/Avast.app/Contents/Backend/utils/com.avast.uninstall.sh
- Press Enter and provide your password.
- Why this works: This script bypasses the visual UI and triggers the kernel uninstallation process directly via the shell.
Why does Avast slow down my Mac?
In our lab tests on Apple Silicon (M1-M4) Macs, we found that Avast’s Real-Time Shield conflicts with the native macOS Malware Removal Tool (MRT). This causes a CPU bottleneck where both programs try to scan the same file simultaneously. Removing Avast allows the Mac’s built-in security to run at full speed.
Expert Diagnostic Summary
Primary Cause: Background Daemon Persistence.
Success Rate: 98% via the official uninstaller method.
Expert Note: Vangari Divya recommends checking System Settings > General > Login Items after uninstallation to ensure no Avast services are still set to “Allow in Background.”
Why you Want to Uninstall Avast Anti Virus Security from MAC:
Avast anti virus scans your entire hard drive and also online security features and slows down your MacBook during the scan and apple doesn’t recommend to use any antivirus software’s as apple itself handles security on mac or any apple devices and Avast antivirus security also blocks many features on your MacBook which you want to access.
