It is very common to see your WiFi stop working right after you install a new iOS update. You might see the WiFi icon but have no internet, or the WiFi button might even be grayed out. This usually happens because the new software has changed how your phone talks to your router, and the old settings are getting in the way.

At asavvyweb, our expert Swapna Reddy (M.Tech) has tested these steps on every iPhone model from the iPhone 12 to the newest versions. We found that you don’t need to be a tech expert to fix this. Most of the time, your phone just needs a quick “refresh” to understand the new software rules.
Why Does This Happen?
When you update your iPhone, the system restarts many background processes. Sometimes, the “WiFi driver” (the part of the phone that handles internet) doesn’t start up correctly. In other cases, your router remembers your “old” phone software and gets confused by the “new” update.
Tested Ways to Fix Your iPhone WiFi
1. Toggle Airplane Mode
This is the fastest way to reset your phone’s internal radio.
- Open your Control Center (swipe down from the top right).
- Tap the Airplane icon to turn it on.
- Wait 15 seconds, then tap it again to turn it off.
Why it works: It forces the phone to stop searching and start a brand-new scan for your WiFi signal.
2. Force Restart Your iPhone
A simple “off and on” often isn’t enough after a big update. You need a force restart to clear the temporary memory.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side Power Button until you see the Apple logo.
3. Forget the WiFi Network
Think of this as giving your phone and router a fresh introduction.
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the small (i) next to your WiFi name.
- Tap Forget This Network.
- Now, tap your WiFi name again and enter your password.
4. Check Your Date and Time
If your phone’s clock is wrong after an update, it won’t connect to the internet for security reasons.
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Make sure Set Automatically is turned ON.
5. Reset Network Settings
This is a very powerful fix. It wipes out all saved WiFi passwords and connection data, clearing any “bad data” left over from the update.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
Note: You will have to enter your WiFi passwords again after this, but it fixes almost all connection bugs.
6. Change Your DNS Settings
Sometimes, your phone can’t find websites because the “phonebook” it uses (called DNS) is slow.
- In your WiFi settings, tap the (i) next to your network.
- Tap Configure DNS and select Manual.
- Add the numbers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. These are Google’s free, fast servers.
7. Turn Off Private WiFi Address
To protect your privacy, iPhones use a “fake” ID for each WiFi network. Sometimes, your home router doesn’t like this after an update.
- In your WiFi settings, tap the (i) and toggle Private Wi-Fi Address to OFF.
- Try connecting again.
8. Disable WiFi Assist
This feature switches to cellular data if the WiFi is slow, but it can sometimes interfere with a stable connection.
- Go to Settings > Cellular.
- Scroll all the way to the bottom and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
9. Delete Old VPN Profiles
If you have a VPN app, its old settings might be blocking your new iOS update from connecting.
- Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- If you see any profiles there, delete them and try the WiFi again.
10. Check for a Carrier Update
Sometimes your phone company releases a small fix right after an Apple update.
- Go to Settings > General > About.
- Stay on that screen for 30 seconds. If a box pops up saying “Update,” tap it.

Expert FAQ (Helpful Tips)
Q: Will I lose my photos if I reset my network settings?
A: No. Resetting network settings only deletes WiFi passwords and Bluetooth pairings. Your photos, messages, and apps are completely safe.
Q: My WiFi button is “Grayed Out” and I can’t even tap it. What do I do?
A: This is a sign that the update caused a temporary glitch in the hardware. Try the Force Restart (Method 2). If that doesn’t work, you may need to wait for the next small Apple update (like iOS 18.0.1) which usually fixes these bugs.
Q: Why is my WiFi slow even when it says it is connected?
A: After an update, your iPhone is very busy “indexing” files in the background. This uses up a lot of power and internet speed. Give it 24 hours, and it should return to normal speed.
